Centenarian enjoys Ready’s Coffee Shop, car shows at the Ocean City Tabernacle

AVALON — Henry Chipman Flurer of Princess Anne, Md., turned 100 years old March 16.

A celebration in his honor was held March 2 at Avalon Country Club with 65 of his closest New Jersey friends in attendance. 

A Korean War veteran serving with the 1092 Combat Engineers, he was stationed there from 1950-1951. American Legion Riders Post 352 of Somers Point presented Flurer with a flag and certificate of appreciation. He was also presented with birthday wishes from the New Jersey American Legion represented by Jimmy Scanlon.

Seaville resident Robert Mills, Flurer’s cousin, said Flurer has been visiting the area at least every other month and attending various functions.

Mills said Flurer enjoyed stopping by Ready’s Coffee Shop on Eighth Street in Ocean City and talking to Dick Boccelli, since they were both drummers back in the day. 

“Of course Dick was a lot more famous but my uncle did have a musicians card and played in various bands in the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s so they hit it off,” Mills said. “He also enjoys the various car shows in the area throughout the year with his favorites being Ocean City Tabernacle and Cold Springs Village shows.”

Furer also enjoys fishing at Corson’s Inlet. 

“It is through these events and activities that he’s met quite a few people in the area. That is why I hosted an event here to honor his 100th birthday,” Mills said.
