Cape May County gets one-day reprieve on new cases of coronavirus

Cape May County had one day of relief over the weekend when there were no new COVID-19 cases reported among residents or non-residents.

Officials from the county Department of Health said that was the first time that occurred since the county began to report non-resident cases two months earlier on June 22.

That report came on Saturday, Aug. 29, but the number of new cases jumped back up on Sunday and Monday.

On Sunday, there were five new positive test results among residents, including one in Lower Township and four more in long-term care facilities, all of them in Woodbine. There also were four new non-resident cases, two each in Cape May and Wildwood.

On Monday, there were nine new cases among residents – one in long-term care in Middle Township and eight in the communities, including three each in Dennis Township and Middle Township and one each in Sea Isle and Wildwood. There also were two new cases among visitors, one in Avalon and the other in North Wildwood.

As of Aug. 31, there were 56 active cases among residents. Most of them – 18 – were in Middle Township. Other cases included seven in Lower Township, six each in Dennis Township and Woodbine, four each in Wildwood and Wildwood Crest; three each in Upper Township and North Wildwood, and two in Ocean City and Cape May. Sea Isle had one case.

There were no active cases among residents in Avalon, Cape May Point, Stone Harbor, West Cape May and West Wildwood.

There also were 27 active cases among visitors, including six each in North Wildwood and Wildwood, three each in Cape May, Wildwood Crest and Ocean City, two in Sea Isle and one each in Stone Harbor, Avalon, Lower Township and Middle Township.

There were no active cases among visitors in Cape May Point, Dennis Township, Upper Township, West Cape May, West Wildwood and Woodbine.

There were 10 active COVID-19 cases in long-term care, seven of them in Woodbine. There were two cases in Lower Township and one in Middle Township.

Since the pandemic began in March, there have been 1,117 cases in Cape May County and 88 fatalities.

Of the fatalities, 28 were in the communities. Lower Township has seen nine coronavirus-related deaths and there have been three deaths in each of Upper Township, Dennis Township, Middle Township, and North Wildwood; two each each in Wildwood, Woodbine and Cape May; and one in Ocean City.

There have been no community fatalities in Avalon, Cape May Point, Sea Isle City, Stone Harbor, West Cape May, West Wildwood and Wildwood Crest.

Sixty residents have died in long-term care facilities in the county, more than half (33) in Lower Township. Other long-term facility deaths were in Middle Township (nine), Dennis Township and Woodbine (eight each), and Ocean City (two).

The most recent fatalities were reported on Aug. 28 – two Middle Township residents, a 79-year-old woman and 84-year-old man.
