Brambley League golfers impressive in challenging conditions

By THE HANDICAPPER V

OCEAN CITY – The Brambley Golf League was in full swing again last week with over 40 golfers hitting the links.

Despite windy conditions that made the course tricky, Dave Carter, Rich Hawthorne and Joe Karwowski rose to the challenge. All three shot a 44 to tie for the overall Low Gross winner this week.

This was Dave’s first time winning this year and it was his personal best for the season. In Flight B, Chet Czerpak, Bill Gardner and Dan White finished in a three-way tie for the Low Gross title, each with a round of 49. Mary Hughes continued her strong performance, securing the Ladies Low Gross title for the second week in a row with a round of 47. John Petrycki was the Senior Division Low Gross winner with an exceptional round of 48, his lowest of the season.

Fred Marcell captured the Flight A Low Net Award with a net score of 35. Jim Downam took the Flight B Low Net title with a net score of 34, while Bruce Johns finished second with a net score of 36. Sheila Grimes secured the Ladies Low Net title with a net score of 34, edging out Dale Praetorius and Jo Anna Johns by one stroke. In the Senior Division, Judy McElderry took first place honors with a net score of 34. Warren Hughes and Joe Tripoli tied for second place with a net score of 36 each. Birdies were hard to come by this week. However, golfers who managed to achieve single birdies included Chet Czerpak, Sheila Grimes, John McVerry and guest player Bob Vallerschamp. Sixteen golfers shot in the 40s this week, including Mark Franks, John McVerry, Tom Bowman, Frank Coppenbarger, Carmen Bonanni, Chet Czerpak, Bill Gardner, Mark Hemmert and, Dale Praetorius. Closest to the pin honors went to Bowman, whose tee shot was 21’9” from the hole on No. 12. This marked Tom’s second time winning closest to the pin honors.

We extend a warm welcome back to returning players Kathy Banco, Beth Markoe, Mary Beth Quinlan, and Cathie Rappoport. The league also had two guest players this week: Chris Devaney’s son-in-law Brad Powers, visiting from Virginia, and Rich Hawthorne’s friend Bob Vallerschamp up from Florida. The Brambley Golf League plays every Monday at the Ocean City Municipal Golf Course. We are at full capacity for the remainder of the season, and Membership Chairperson Jeanne Robinson has done an excellent job in getting us to this point.
