Atlantic County goes another five-day stretch without COVID death

Atlantic County went another five days without a COVID-19 fatality, health officials reported Monday, Aug. 31.

Since the pandemic began, 245 residents have died from the the coronavirus and 3,976 have been infected. The Atlantic County Division of Public Health has reported 2,689 residents have recovered.

On Monday, there were 14 new cases reported in the county affecting residents from 18 to 79 years of age. Cases included two each from Absecon, Egg Harbor Township and Northfield, and one each from Atlantic City, Buena Borough, Hamilton Township and Pleasantville.

Over the weekend, health officials confirmed 22 more residents have tested positive for COVID-19 including 12 males from 10 to 66 years old and 10 women from 39 to 69 years old. Cases included five from Hamilton Township, four from Hammonton, three each from Atlantic City and Egg Harbor Township, two from Buena Borough, and one each from Egg Harbor City, Linwood, Northfield, Somers Point and Pleasantville.

On Friday, Aug. 28, there were 15 positive tests including five residents from Hamilton Township, three from Egg Harbor Township, two each from Absecon and Galloway, and one each from Brigantine, Buena Borough and Pleasantville.

On Thursday, Aug. 27, there were only eight new cases of COVID-19 including three men from 45 to 65 years old and five women from 17 to 64. Five are from Hamilton Township, and one each is from Atlantic City, Margate and Pleasantville.

The last fatalities were reported Wednesday, Aug. 26. Health officials said two men, a 60-year-old from Margate and a 71-year-old from Galloway, succumbed to complications from the coronavirus. Both had underlying health conditions.

They were the third and fourth fatalities from COVID-19 since Aug. 2.

Atlantic County will continue to provide COVID-19 testing by appointment at its drive-thru facility in Northfield at Route 9 and Dolphin Avenue, behind the county public works yard.

More than 3,000 residents have been tested at the county facility since April 9 with 17.8 percent having tested positive, officials said. Testing is scheduled for 9 to 11:30 a.m. each Tuesday through Sept. 29,  except next week, when testing will be Wednesday, Sept. 9 because of the Labor Day holiday.

Tests are available for symptomatic and asymptomatic county residents with or without a doctor’s prescription. 

Residents must provide proof of county residency and appointment confirmation.
