By DAVID NAHAN/Sentinel staff

Although Atlantic County is approaching 4,000 residents who have been infected by COVID-19, there have been fewer deaths reported in recent weeks.

On Monday, the county Department of Public Health noted it has been six days since the last death related to the coronavirus and two deaths since Aug. 2. Both victims were residents of long-term care facilities with underlying conditions.

As of Monday, there are 3,896 residents who have tested positive for the coronavirus and there have been 243 residents whose lives were claimed by complications from COVID-19 since April 2.

The week began with nine new positive cases among residents from 17 to 70 years old. The cases were confirmed in Pleasantville (three), Atlantic City and Hamilton Township (two each) and Estell Manor and Galloway (one each).

Over the weekend, Aug. 22 and 23, there were 19 new COVID-19 cases in residents from 10 months to 78 years old. Cases included four each in Atlantic City and Pleasanville, one in Egg Harbor City, two in Egg Harbor Township, five in Hamilton Township, one in Longport, one in Margate and one in Ventnor.

On Friday there were 13 cases in residents from 16 to 75 years old and on Thursday, eight new cases among males from 1 year old to 61 and 10 females from 3 years old to 70. On Wednesday, Aug. 19, there were 11 new cases among residents from 1 to 64 years old.

Atlantic County is continuing COVID-19 testing by appointment at its drive-thru facility in Northfield at Route 9 and Dolphin Avenue, behind the county public works yard. Testing is 9 to 11:30 a.m. each Tuesday through Sept. 29. The only exception will be the week of Labor Day when testing will occur on Wednesday, Sept. 9, instead of Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Health officials said the test site is available for symptomatic and asymptomatic county residents with or without a doctor’s prescription. Residents must provide proof of county residency and appointment confirmation. Appointments can be made online at www.aclink.org.
