Cape May County events: A Superhero costume design, author party, beach cleanup

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — Cape May County Library presents Superhero Costume Design as a part of the FandoMania Fest, a series of fandom-related events leading up to Cape Con 2025.

Presented by Melody Marshall, the program will explore the costume design behind some favorite superheroes and test participants’ skills with a drawing activity. Marshall is a teaching artist, props designer and writer from southern New Jersey who is a strong supporter and advocate for arts education.

Superhero Costume Design is set to begin at 6 p.m. March 11 in the Presentation Room at the Cape May Court House branch.

Birthday party

for local author

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — The Cape May County Library Children’s Department will host a book birthday party to celebrate the release of local author Julia Mills’ book “Robinson’s New Thing.” Mills will share her book-making process along with a drawing demonstration and a Q&A session. All children in attendance will receive a free book.

The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. March 22 in the Joseph Millman Room at the Lower Cape branch.

Superhero Rivals

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — Cape May County Library presents Superhero Rivals Art Class as a part of FandoMania Fest, a series of fandom-related events leading up to Cape Con 2025.

Garland Hollman will be presenting the program, which will explore what makes a character and provide tips and tricks to draw a superhero or supervillain. Participants are welcome to bring portfolios and previous works. Hollman has more than  20 years of experience as a multimedia creator. He holds credits with Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Upper Deck, Vibe Magazine, Copic Markers and other media outlets.

The Superhero Rivals Art Class is scheduled for 1 p.m. March 24th in the Presentation Room at the Cape May Court House branch. 

Registration is required. To reserve a spot, visit the online event calendar at cmclibrary.org or call (609) 463-6350, ext. 700. Supplies needed for this class include pencils, pens, markers or other art supplies of choice and paper or a sketchbook.

Plastics workshop,

beach cleanup

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — The Cape May County 4-H Youth Development Program is partnering with New Jersey Watershed Ambassadors to present a Microplastics Sifter Workshop and a Beach Cleanup in March and April. The events are open to the public.

The Microplastics Sifter Workshop is scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m. March 30 at the Lockwood 4-H Youth Center, 355 Court House–South Dennis Road. 

Participants will learn about microplastics, how they affect the environment and how to build a beach sand sifter to clean a beach. 

The Beach Cleanup is scheduled for April 12 as part of 4-H Community Service Day. The location and time will be announced at the Microplastics Workshop. Attendance at the workshop is requires to participate in the beach cleanup. 4-H members who attend will earn community service hours.

Cape Con returns

to library April 5

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — The Cape May County Library will host its reintroduction of Cape Con from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 5 at the Cape May Court House branch. 

The library will feature events related to all things pop culture, including comics, video games, tabletop games, anime, geek culture and more. 

Both guests and vendors are encouraged to cosplay as their favorite characters and enter the contest, as well as test their knowledge with trivia, attend panels and workshops and figure their way out of an escape room.

All patrons who attend will be eligible to enter a giveaway for two Sunday passes to FanExpo Philadelphia on May 18.
