Daniel Lee Merritt, 74

Daniel Lee Merritt, born on August 31, 1950, passed away suddenly and went to be with the Lord on February 1, 2025. Dan was 74 years old.

Dan was born in Somers Point, New Jersey. He lived a full and adventurous life. He graduated from Mainland High School in 1969 and later attended the University of Florida in Gainesville. Growing up at the shore, he was an avid surfer, riding the waves in Ocean City and Margate, New Jersey. Dan also had a passion for tennis and had a court in his own backyard, where his friends would gather on weekends to come and play tennis. Later in life, his love of horses became another defining part of who he was bringing him great joy.

Dan began his career as a manufacturing sales representative, but his entrepreneur spirit lead him and his beloved wife, Missy Miller Merritt, to purchase Avalon Seafood and Produce Market in Avalon, New Jersey in 1996. Through hard work and dedication, they built the market into a thriving business that became a staple of the community. Customers didn’t just come in for the fresh seafood and produce they came in for Dan’s warm smile, his kindness and the stories he always had to share. After selling the market in 2009 Dan and Missy continued their journey by investing in real estate purchasing storefronts in Avalon, New Jersey

Following their dream of a quieter and more peaceful life, Dan and Missy moved to Mill Spring, North Carolina where they built a beautiful home at Walnut Creek Preserve, an equestrian community. Dan poured his heart into the land, creating a serene and picturesque place for them to both enjoy together.

Dan will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was a man of warmth, humor, generosity, and always had a story to tell. His presence brought light and laughter to so many. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

Dan is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Missy Miller Merritt, his son Christopher Merritt, daughter-in-law, Lori Merritt, and his four cherished grandchildren, Eve, Reed, Brooke and Mitchell of Palo Alto, California. He is also survived by his brother-in-laws Peter Miller (Ellyn), Scott Miller (Susan), Dr. Glenn Miller (Lynne), his sister-in-laws Leddy Naudain (Richard) and Monica Raab (Dr. Gary) He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins as well as his cherished Cocker Spaniel “ Shakes.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Lee  Merritt and Florence Stitler

A celebration of life will take place this summer in Ocean City, New Jersey with details to be announced at a later date.

Dan’s love, laughter, and incredible stories will be remembered always.
