Personal best rounds in Brambley Golf League

By THE HANDICAPPER V

OCEAN CITY – The Brambley Golf League saw an abundance of low scores and personal best rounds last week.

Rich Hawthorne shot his best round of the year, a 38, to capture the overall Low Gross title. His exceptional round included one birdie and nine pars. This is the second time this season that Rich has shot in the 30s, a feat accomplished by only a few. Frank Coppenbarger, a new player to the league this year, shot a 50 this week to secure the Flight B Low Gross title, proving that new players can give the league members a challenge.

Mary Hughes returned to her usual form, shooting a 46 to win the Ladies Low Gross title. John Petrycki also shot his best round of the season, a 46, to secure the Senior Division Low Gross title.

Fred Marcell and John Master had outstanding rounds this week, both shooting 4 strokes under their handicap to tie for the Low Net Flight A title with a net score of 33. Toni Herting shot a blistering round of 42 to secure the third place Low Net A award. For the second week in a row, Jim Downam shot 6 strokes under his handicap to win the Flight B Low Net award with a net score of 31. Chris DeVaney, Will Evans, and Bob McNamara shared second place honors with a net score of 36.

In the Ladies Division, Jane Williams shot her best round of the season, an impressive 51, which was 8 strokes under her handicap, to secure the Ladies Low Net title. Liz Dykie also shot a season-best round of 52 to secure second place Ladies Low Net with a net score of 33. Jim McElderry, shooting a season-best round of 48, won the Senior Low Net title with a net score of 33. Arlene Gottschall tied her personal best round this week to secure 2nd place Senior Low Net with a net score of 33. Right behind Arlene, Warren Hughes also shot a season-best round to secure third place Low Net in the Senior Division with a net score of 34. Fred Marcell secured the Closest to the Pin title with his tee shot landing 2’7” from the pin on No. 12. Fred birdied the hole and currently holds the closest to the pin shot of the year.

Nine golfers achieved birdies this week, including Tom Bowman, Rich Hawthorne, Toni Herting, Mary Hughes, Joe Karwowski, Fred Marcell, John Master, John Petrycki, and Derek Rearden. Sixteen golfers shot in the 40s this week, including Toni Herting, Fred Marcell, John Master, John McVerry, Tom Bowman, Joe Karwowski, Mark Hemmert, Mary Hughes, John Petrycki, Jeff Mitchell, Mike Toscano, Jean Bush, Jim McElderry, Jo Ann Bonanni, Carmine Bonanni, and Chet Czerpak.

The Brambley Golf League plays every Monday morning at 8 a.m. at the Ocean City Municipal Golf Course. Welcome back to returning player Jeff Mitchell, and also to guest player, Pat DeHart, friend of member Toni Herting. We are now in mid-season form with 42 golfers participating this week.
