Somers Point adds programs for adults, senior citizens

SOMERS POINT — The city has launched a recreation program for adults and seniors with a goal of improving wellness and socialization.

According to a news release from the city, residents can immerse themselves in Somers Point’s vibrant community with free activities for adults of all ages and backgrounds.

One of the events, We Walk Somers Point, is held at 8:30 a.m. Mondays, when neighbors get together for a foot tour of the community. Other programs in the works include pickleball, shuffleboard and tennis, as well as educational and artistic opportunities.

City Councilman Charles Haberkorn said the walking program began June 3 and will continue throughout the summer. He said walkers will meet at one of four locations on a rotating basis — behind City Hall, behind the Senior Center at 22 Ambler Road, Bay Avenue near Shore Medical Center (June 17) and at John F. Kennedy Memorial Park (June 24).

Haberkorn said about 10 people participated the first week and that he hopes more will join as the event becomes better known.

“It’s going to be one of those things like Field of Dreams; build it and they will come,” he said.

Haberkorn said the walk is casual and that people can turn around and head back whenever they want. The first walk lasted about an hour and a quarter.

“It’s really just to get people out to have a healthier lifestyle, meet neighbors and make friendships,” he said. “Walking helps mentally and physically.”
