Active cases of COVID-19 in Cape May County have declined

On Monday, the Cape May County Department of Health announced nine new cases of COVID-19 and the death of a 90-year-old Sea Isle City man from coronavirus.

The death 77-year-old Woodbine man was reported on Oct. 15, bringing the overall toll of COVID-19 in the county to 94.

Overall the number of active cases in the county has dropped, including in Ocean City and Upper Township, which had the most cases in recent weeks.

There are now six active cases in Ocean City, after the number reached close to 30, and 10 in Upper Township, well below the higher totals reported recently.

Lower Township and Middle Township now have the highest number, with 16 and 14, respectively.

Other active cases include five each in Wildwood Crest and Woodbine, three each in North Wildwood and Wildwood, two each in Avalon, Dennis Township and Sea Isle City, and one in West Cape May.

Overall, there were 69 active cases among county residents.

There are no active cases among residents in Cape May, Cape May Point, Stone Harbor and West Wildwood.

There were two active cases reported among non-residents, one in Avalon and the other in North Wildwood, and two active cases in long-term care in Dennis Township and Middle Township.

As of Oct. 19, there have been 1,483 cases of the coronavirus in the county. 

There were 10 new cases Sunday, six among residents and four among visitors. On Saturday, seven new cases among residents. On Friday, there were five residents who were confirmed with COVID-19, on Thursday there were a dozen and on Wednesday, Oct. 14, there were 10. On Tuesday, Oct. 13, there were three.

There were no other new non-resident cases nor any new cases in long-term care.

Statewide, there were nearly 1,200 new cases reported with five counties – Ocean, Essex, Union, Middlesex and Bergen – each topping 100. Ocean led with 154.

Statewide, the death toll is at 14,425 attributed to COVID-19, with another 1,789 deaths suspected to be caused by the coronavirus.

Since March 4, according to the state Department of Health, 221,205 residents of New Jersey have been infected with the coronavirus. Nationwide, more than 8 million people have been infected by COVID-19, including 387,692 in the last seven days, and 218,986 have died, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
