Charles Saunders Baker III, 96

Charles Saunders Baker III, 96, passed away June 5, 2022 at Frye Regional Medical Center.

Born October 20, 1925 in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Charles Saunders Baker, Jr. and Lillian Hutchinson Weaver Baker.  A member of New Jerusalem Lutheran Church, he was a graduate of William & Mary College with a degree in chemical engineering.  He retired as a math teacher from Ocean City High School, Ocean City, New Jersey.  Charles was a WWII Marine Corps Veteran, having served in the Asian Pacific Campaign on Iwo Jima and was awarded a Purple Heart. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothea Elizabeth Baker, and sister, Charlotte Bond.

Charles is survived by sons, William W.  Baker and wife Patsie and Alan C. Baker and wife Barbara; daughter, Janet B. Hassing and husband Finn; brother-in-law, Elwood Bond; eight grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.  

Burial will be held in the VA Cemetery in Salisbury, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to New Jerusalem Lutheran Church, 2120 Startown Road, Hickory, NC 28602.
