Bauduy Robert Grier, Jr., (Beau) passed quietly from this life, at his home in Pacific Beach, CA on April 11, at the age of 61 surrounded by his sisters, Jane Layman and Stephanie Williams, and his best friend Mark Stanich.
Beau is best remembered for his smile. He had one for everyone. Fitness was a lifelong passion and like everything else in his life, he embraced it with exuberance. As a 33 year resident of Pacific Beach, CA, he loved the San Diego lifestyle and being so close to both the ocean and the mountains enabling him to surf, snowboard, hike, camp, bike and golf.
Born in Wilmington, DE to Bauduy Grier, Sr and Betty Jo Banks Grier, Beau came east annually for a month to celebrate his birthday and spend time at the family beach house in Ocean City, NJ, where he first learned to surf. Always full of energy, Beau was known for his legendary bike rides, baggo and mini golf tournaments, surfing lessons for nieces and nephews and home repair projects.
A 1979 graduate of Concord High School in Wilmington, DE, Beau played trumpet in the marching band, was part of The Concord Creator’s Jazz Ensemble and played varsity soccer. Beau went on to earn an Associate Degree in Business from Delaware Technical and Community College.
Good natured and easy going, Beau would do anything for anyone. He was loved by so many. In addition to family, he had his beach family in Ocean City, NJ, his Scripps family in LaJolla, CA, where he worked as part of the Transport Team for the last 15 years, and his AA family where he helped so many embrace sobriety and practiced his recovery for over 23 years.
Our thanks go out to so many who came to visit, sent food, cards, gifts and generally supported Beau and our family in his last months, most especially the Interim Hospice Team and a few special Scripps co-workers.
Beau Is survived by his sisters, Stephanie Williams, of Bothell, WA and Jane Layman, of Acworth, GA, his nephew, Ted Williams and nieces, Alison Williams (Amy Andrews), Elizabeth Burrow (Brandon) and Victoria Layman, two great-nephews, Banks and HanwayBurrow, his Aunt, Jane Runkle, cousins Carolyn Runkle and Jennifer Gaver. He is also survived by family in Utah, MassoudParvar (Azzat), Victor Parvar, Natasha and Dustin Larsen.
A celebration of Beau’s life will be held on Sunday, July 3 from 1-3 pm at The Atlantic City Country Club, One Leo Fraser Dr., Northfield, NJ 08225. All are welcome, however, please email janeglayman@gmail.com before June 18th if you plan to attend.
