Individuals, relay teams medal in Bridgeton
BRIDGETON – Mustang Camryn Dirkes and Red Raider Elaina Styer jumped their way to titles Wednesday, May 25, at the Cape-Atlantic League Individual Track and Field Championships at Bridgeton High School and their teammates ran away with their own titles and medals.
Ocean City’s Owen Ritti and Nick Scarangelli won titles in the 1600 and 3200 meters respectively.
Dirkes, a senior, won the triple jump with a distance of 38’5.5” inches, an event in which Styer finished second at 36’0.25”. Ocean City’s Sarah Gleason was seventh at 32’9”, and Mainland’s Sienna Bodkin (32’) and Kalla Tocci-Rogers (31’2.5”) were 11th and 12th.
Styer took the long jump title, leaping 17’7.5”, a half-inch better than Absegami freshman Jaidah Garret, who finished second. Mustang Paige Bonczek, a junior like Styer, was fourth at 16’7”. Ocean City junior Tricia Nicoletti was 13th at 14’9”
Mainland’s 4×800 relay team kicked off the track portion of the meet by taking first place with a time of 10:50.54. Running the relay for the Mustangs were Lily Malone, Claudia Booth, Sophie Goldstein and Chloe Malone.
Ocean City’s team of Mallory Gould, Maggie Halbruner, Tricia Nicoletti and Naomi Nnewihe took third place in the 4×100 relay with their time of 50.68 seconds. Coach Tim Cook noted that was just a half-second off the school record. Mainland was fourth in the event at 51.51 seconds and Atlantic County Tech won in 50.08 seconds.
Mustang sophomore Gillian Lovett won the 1600 meters with her time of 5:20 with teammates Ava McDole (5:37), a freshman, and Savannah Hodgens (5:40.63), a senior, third and fourth, respectively. Ocean City senior Emma Weber (6:02.1), and sophomores Frankie Ritzel (6:02.87) and Taylor Amstutz (6:07.19) were 10th, 11th and 12th.
Lovett was second in the 800 meters in 2:27.59, behind Middle’s Keira Phillips, who won in 2:25.93. McDole (2:37.12) and Chloe Malone (2:39.13) were seventh and 10th for Mainland and Ocean City’s Cheryl Connell (2:38.27) and Olivia Palmieri (2:42.92) were ninth and 12th.
Ocean City freshman Chloe Care was second in the 3200 meters with a time of 11:59.32, with Hodgens (12:33.83) and Mustang Claudia Booth (12:41.69) fourth and fifth. Egg Harbor Township junior Lindsay Taylor won in 11:51.45. Ocean City’s Abby Inserra (12:59.91) and Isabelle Smith (13:27.52) were sixth and eighth and Mainland’s Lily Malone was 10th in 13:35.67.
Ritti won the 1600 meters in 4:25.54 after running at the back of the pack in the early going, before sprinting into the lead in the final lap. Mainland’s Linden Wineland was second in 4:28.9 and fellow Red Raiders Ethan Buck (5:09.9) and Ethan Eiler (5:13.63) were 11th and 12th.
In the 3200 meters, Scarangelli won with a time of 9:49.91 and teammates Chris Sardy (10:15.92) and Kal Heyman (10:28.40) were fourth and sixth. Mustang Micah Miller was 5th in 11:39.22.
Ocean City’s Skylar Cohen, a sophomore, finished second in the pole vault to Lower Cape May Regional senior MaryKatelyn West, who won by clearing 8’6”. Cohen cleared 8’.
Mainland’s Caitlyn Lin, a junior was third in the high jump, clearing 4’8”, Tocci-Rogers was fifth at the same height and Ava McDole was sixth at 4’6”. Middle’s Ciara DiMauro won at 4’10”.
Ocean City freshman Nnewihe was second in the 100 meters with her time of 13.18 seconds, behind Absegami junior Hannah Ross who was first in 13.07 seconds. Ocean City senior Gould was eighth in 13.49 seconds and Cohen was 14th in 14.11 seconds.
Nnewihe was fourth in the 200 meters in 26.99 seconds and teammate Halbruner was sixth in 27.89 seconds. Mustang Bonczek was eighth in 28.02 seconds. Absegami’s Ross won in 26.84 seconds.
Mainland put three girls in the top four in the 100 meter hurdles. Millville’s Leah Ellis won in 15.87 seconds followed by Mustangs Emma Smith (16.94), Isabelle VandenBerg (17.29) and Kendall Demorat (17.35). Ocean City’s AnnaMaria Marczyk, a freshman, was sixth in 17.54 seconds.
VandenBerg finished second in the 400 meter hurdles with her time of 1:09 and Ocean City’s Natalie Hope was eighth in 1:13.87. Middle’s Keira Phillips won in 1:05.35. Red Raider Gleason was 17th in 1:18.84.
Dirkes finished third in the javelin with her throw of 106’5”. Ocean City’s Corinne Williams and Marissa Sampson were ninth and 10th at 86’8” and 86’1”. Mustang Olivia Leap was 12th at 83’9” and Sydney Booth was 15th at 71’6”.
Mainland senior Cadence Fitzgerald was fourth in the discus at 106’1” and teammate Kaitlyn Boggs was ninth at 90’8”. Ocean City freshman Madelyn Adamson was 16th at 62’6”.
Fitzgerald also was fourth in the shot put with a toss of 34’7.75”. Boggs was seventh at 33’11.5”, teammate Naz’Jade Cochran-Hutt was eighth at 32’10.75”. Ocean City’s Madison Majors was 11th at 29’9”.
Boys finishers
Ocean City sophomore Nick Layton was third in the pole vault, clearing 11’. Millville’s Travis Gandy won by clearing 11’6”.
Mainland junior Andrew Ramos was third in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.37 seconds. Ocean City’s Dan Givens (17.25), Cole LaBarre (19.57) and Connor Berich (19.83) were eighth, 14th and 16th, and Mainland’s Colin Kummings was 10th in 17.97 seconds.
In the 400-meter hurdles, Mainland junior William Spollen was third in 59.63 seconds and Ocean City sophomore James Burke was fifth in 1:00.64. LaBarre was 14th in 1:06.24.
Ocean City’s Reece Wagner was sixth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:04.24. Christian DeGuzman of Absegami won in 1:59.82.
Mainland’s Leo Pierre, a sophomore, was eighth in the 200 meters in 23.65 seconds. EHT’s DJ Germann won in 22.56 seconds with Lower Cape May Regional’s Anthony V. Gentile second in 22.99 seconds.
Ocean City’s 4×400 relay team was sixth in 3:35.81 and 4×800 relay team was seventh in 9:29.79
Mustang Mawali Ossuniyi, a junior, finished fourth in the high jump, clearing 6’2”. EHT’s Isaiah Glenn won by clearing 6’4”. Ocean City freshman Hercules Stewart was 10th at 5’6”.
Ocean City senior Dan Givens was fifth in the triple jump finals with his leap of 43’6” and Mainland’s Josiah Williams (40’8”) and William Murray (38’2.5”0 were ninth and 13th.
Murray was ninth in the long jump at 20’2.5” and teammate Leo Pierre was 12th at 19’.
Red Raider Ryan McBride was sixth in the javelin with his throw of 137’7.5” and Layton was ninth at 130’4”. Mainland’s Stephen Jones was 12th at 114’6” and teammates Nikko Carfagno (97’9”) and JJ Sinclair (92’4”) were 15th and 16th.
Ocean City’s Colin Dice was 10th in the discus at 113’. St. Augustine Prep’s Franklin Simms won with a throw of 167’6”.
Mainland senior Billy Weldon was 10th in the shot put with his throw by 41’4”. EHT’s James Mahana won with his throw of 50’5”.
