Mustang Goldberg, O.C.’s Cameron Yoa qualify for golf states

WEST DEPTFORD – Mainland Regional’s Evan Goldberg finished second and Ocean City junior Cameron Yoa finished fourth at Monday’s Central/South Jersey sectional golf tournament, earning berths at the state meet next Tuesday.

Goldberg shot a 79 on the Riverwinds course and Yoa shot an 81. 

Jerry Lu of West Windsor Plainsboro North fired the low of 76.

Mustang Xander Matik was fifth at sectionals with an 82. Ocean City’s Sam Williams was 16th with an 84 and Mainland’s Jake Hennelly was 20th with an 86. Alex Bayham of Ocean City was 36th with a 90 and Mainland’s Zach Freed was 38th with a 92.

Ocean City coach Ed Ritti said Yoa has been a solid No. 2 on the Red Raider team this season and his low score on nine holes has been a 36.

The Mustang golfers are undefeated this season with a 11-0 record. Three times their team score has been a 147, including when they beat Ocean City earlier this season when the Red Raiders posted a 165.

Goldberg, Freed and Matik have all shot 34s on nine holes in matches this season.

Also putting up good scores for the Mustangs and helping them along for their undefeated record are Luke Tappeiner, Phil Stefanowicz, Isabella Ruzzo and Anika Deshpande. 

Ocean City is 9-3 this season, with the only losses coming to Mainland and twice to St. Augustine Prep.

Among Ocean City’s best scorers have been Bayham, Williams, Yoa, Alex Loesch, Race Meyers and Isabella Freund.

Other scorers for the Red Raiders are Zach Mazzitelli and Sam Ritti.
