ELIZABETH ‘BETTY’ MOFFATT, 77

She was the beloved wife of James V. Moffatt for 54 years and the mother of Sidney Moffatt, the late Kirsten Moffatt and Jay Moffatt. She also leaves behind two sons-in-law, Johnny White and Jeffrey Kreiss, along with one granddaughter, Alexis Moffatt-Kreiss, and Jay’s life-partner, Jen Zamias.

Betty was born and raised in Jackson, Mich., where she graduated from Saint Mary’s High School and went on to college at Cornell University. She graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education in 1965. After graduation, she taught elementary school for several years in Cleveland Heights, Ohio.

Betty and her husband and children moved house numerous times — from Cleveland to Atlanta (with a one-year work exchange in London) to Denver to Philadelphia. In 1991, the family purchased a home in Cape May, which they moved into year-round in 1996.

Betty was an avid bridge and tennis player. She became an active member of the Cape May Tennis Club and a social member of the Corinthian Yacht Club of Cape May. She made many friends in both organizations. She spent several years as a board member of Cape May Stage, including two years as its president.

Among her favorite pastimes were traveling abroad, reading novels, completing the daily crossword puzzle, playing Words with Friends and cooking delicious evening dinners.

A celebration of Betty’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Betty’s memory to the nonprofit Fund for Cape May, Congress Hall, 200 Congress Place, Cape May, NJ 08204.
