Upper’s Danielle Davies highlights women improving life for women

UPPER TOWNSHIP — Danielle Davies enjoys highlighting women from any walk of life who are doing something to make life better for other women.

The Upper Township resident recently launched the fifth season of her podcast, “Roar with Danielle Davies: Women, Culture & Impact.”

It features conversations with women locally, nationally and internationally about how culture shapes their lives and how women are shaping culture in return.

Davies grew up in the township and attended Ocean City High School, graduating in 1992 after four years as class president.

The former entertainment writer for Atlantic City-focused publications, she now writes two regular columns for Cape May Magazine.

Danielle Davies.

Davies ran unsuccessfully for the Cape May County Board of Freeholders (Board of County Commissioners) in 2017 “because I felt like that’s what you do if you want to fix something.”

Afterward, she realized there are many other ways to make a positive impact on society and started recording videos that she posted to YouTube. That evolved into the podcast.

Davies said that her career in journalism honed her interviewing skills, making her a competent host for the podcast.

“I didn’t look at it as a skill, just part of what I do. I did it so long that it was second nature to have good conversations,” she said.

On the podcast, she talks to women who do things for other women in different ways, such as writing novels with positive female role models and holding art retreats to build a community outside the family that women can do with other women like them.

“All are seeing gaps and filling them for other women,” she said.

Davies said one of her goals is to inform listeners that they can help in small ways without taking on a burdensome project.

“You don’t have to do everything, dedicate your life to it. You can take your own area of expertise and do something good with it that makes the world better. I want them to be inspired to go in their lane and do something to make a change,” she said.

Davies said Season 5 has 13 full conversations, one released every Tuesday through Dec. 29, plus a five-minute takeaway episode every Thursday. Full episodes are edited by Emmy Award-winning editor John Gill, who was also raised in Upper Township and is an OCHS graduate.

Guests include:

— Catherine Gray, creator of the documentary “Show Her the Money,” on why women-led companies get just 1 percent to 2 percent of venture capital.

— Dr. Sarah Berg, OB-GYN and founder of Selfority, on the menopause symptom doctors still call “irritability.”

— Amy Taylor-Kabbaz, author of “Mama Rising,” on matrescence, the identity shift of becoming a mother.

— Alexa Starks, CEO of Mothered Media, on why motherhood builds leadership skills.

— Marina Rabinek, founder of the Military Women’s Collective, in a special re-release for Veterans Day.

“Roar with Danielle Davies is about women womening, about how culture shapes us and how we shape it right back,” Davies said.

New episodes are available at listentoroar.com, on YouTube at youtube.com/@roarpod and wherever podcasts are found.
