OCEAN CITY – Ocean City Beach Patrol Chief Erich Becker announced Michael Castro as the patrol’s EMT of the year and Steven Salarski as the Lifeguard of the Year Saturday night at the Ocean City Music Pier.
During a break in the Junior Miss Ocean City Pageant, Becker also presented the Chief’s Award – one of the highest recognitions the OCBP bestows – on Frank Christy, “a true friend to every single person on this patrol.”
The three recipients took the stage at the Music Pier to accept their awards.
Becker explained that Castro was chosen by his peers and the administration, “a testament to the deep respect he has earned through his unwavering commitment.”
The chief said Castro brings a “no-nonsense attitude of gratitude” to the OCBP, “consistently providing the first and best response to every patron in need.
“Michael’s genuine love for this work is evident in every action he takes, and he serves as a powerful reminder of the impact one dedicated individual can make,” Becker said.
He added that beyond his clinical skills, Castro “is a steadying presence during high-pressure situations, ensuring that both his team and the public feel safe and supported.”
Salarski is a rookie guard this season.
“While this is Steven’s first year with our team, he has quickly proven himself to be an invaluable asset to the beach patrol,” Becker said.
The chief added that Salarski approached every shift “with a level of professionalism and vigilance that we typically expect from seasoned veterans.”
Salarski learned quickly, adapted to the challenges and kept his “sharp” focus on the safety of beach-goers.
Supervisors and fellow guards noticed the rookie’s dedication and strong work ethic.
“We are incredibly proud of the foundation he has built this season,” Becker said, “and we look forward to seeing his continued growth and success with us.”
The chief called Christy more than a colleague.
“He is a trusted friend and a pillar of this department,” he said. “Whether we are facing a routine day or a high-stakes emergency, I know I can count on him completely.”
The chief cited Christy’s “incredible gift for leadership” and how to motivate staff when the pressure is on. Christy, he added, “possesses a calm, steadying presence that makes everyone feel secure, even when there are hundreds of swimmers in the water.”
Christy volunteers first for special events and covers demanding late shifts throughout the summer.
“He carries a deep, infectious love for this job that mirrors the passion we all share, and he reminds us every day why we do what we do,” Becker said. “Frank,” he told the OCBP lieutenant, “your dedication, your composure, and your friendship are the heartbeat of this team. Thank you for being the person we can always lean on.”
