OCEAN CITY – There will be a flea market and hoagie sale Saturday, Aug. 22, at Holy Trinity Church, 2998 Bay Ave., Ocean City.

The flea market runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Vendors can still rent space. Contact the church at (609) 399-1019 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday for information. 

The hoagie sale begins at 10 a.m. and will run until supplies sell out.

SOMERS POINT – New Jersey AMVETS and AMVETS Post 911 NJ are hosting the Atlantic County clerk 11 aa.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, at the American Veterans Resource Center, 415 Shore Road, Somers Point.

This event is open to Atlantic County veterans only. The must bring their DD-214, which will be scanned. Veterans’ photos will be taken. The clerk’s office will keep the information safeguarded in county records and the ID card will be mailed to veterans.

School supply drive

in Upper Township

UPPER TOWNSHIP – The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 239 of Tuckahoe is sponsoring a school supply drive this summer for needy students in Upper Township.  

New supplies are appreciated. They include notebooks, composition books, two-pocket folders, zippered pencil cases, pencils, highlighters, Elmer’s glue and/or glue sticks, Crayola markers, crayons and colored pencils, scotch tape rolls, masking tape, index cards, black sharpies, loose leaf paper and acrylic paint.  Even new backpacks are needed.  

Supplies can be dropped off during normal business hours at the following locations: Larry’s 50s Diner on Rt. 50, Tuckahoe; Rooted Wellness, Wayside Village, 38 Tuckahoe Road, Marmora; Salon 21, Rt. 50, Seaville; and  each of the three Upper Township schools.   

The supply drive will continue from Memorial Day weekend until Aug. 31.  Look for the red donation box.

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources has scheduled the workshop Vermicomposting, Composting with Worms, for 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 22 at Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County, 355 Courthouse–South Dennis Road in Cape May Court House.

Presenter Belinda Chester, Consumer Horticulture Program Associate I, will discuss indoor composting methods, vermicomposting and how to build a mini-worm bin. Participants will take home a compost/soil thermometer and a DIY worm bin.

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — Rutgers Cooperative Extension Family and Community Health Sciences Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Group has scheduled its next meeting for 5 to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 24 at Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County, 355 Courthouse-South Dennis Road in Cape May Court House. Anneliese Kuemmerle, FCHS Program Associate II for Cape May County, oversees the program that meets 10 months each year, providing information and support to county grandparents who are raising their grandchildren.

The September program will feature a talk on fraud awareness presented by Sturdy Savings Bank. Presenters will be Joseph Badecki, bank security officer, and Michael Latini, bank chief risk officer. 

New families are always welcome. The program is specifically designed for grandparents or relatives who have full-time responsibility for raising their grandchildren or other relatives.

Child care will be provided and a light supper will be served at 5 p.m., with the program following at 5:30 p.m.

Family-to-Family

Education Program

NAMI Atlantic Cape May is now accepting registrations for its nationally recognized Family-to-Family education program, a free course designed for family members, partners, and friends of adults living with mental health conditions.

The eight-week program will be held every Tuesday evening Sept. 8 through Oct. 27 from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. via Zoom, making it convenient for participants throughout Atlantic and Cape May Counties to attend from home.

Family-to-Family is taught by trained volunteers who have firsthand experience supporting a loved one with a mental health condition. Participants will gain practical knowledge about mental health conditions and treatment options, develop effective communication and problem-solving skills, learn strategies for self-care, and connect with others who understand the challenges of supporting a loved one.

The program is offered free of charge as part of NAMI’s mission to provide education, support, and hope to families affected by mental illness.

WILDWOOD — The Citizens/Veterans Advisory Committee has scheduled its 2nd annual Veterans Benefit & Health Fair for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 23 at the Wildwoods Convention Center, 4501 Boardwalk.

Featured services and activities will include Wills for Warriors, VA services and support, health screenings and free flu shots.

More than 80 vendors will be providing resources and information.

In addition, there will be a free lunch for veterans and guest speaker. All veterans, active-duty military personnel and their families are welcome.

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — The Cape May County Library has scheduled a lineup of free concerts at the Cape May branch and bandstand stage in the Cape May County Park and Zoo.

The Cape Shore Jazz Orchestra is set to perform an outdoor concert at 2 p.m. Aug. 22 at the park and Zoo .

On Aug. 29, the Cape May String Band will be performing traditional string band music at 2 p.m. at the park and zoo.

SOMERS POINT — The Somers Point Good Old Days Festival Committee has announced the return of the Run to Remember 5K, a community event dedicated to honoring the courageous men and women who serve as first responders and remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

This year’s race carries added significance as our nation marks the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, a day that forever changed America and highlighted the extraordinary courage of first responders.

NJ Health is looking for people who are willing to share their time, talents and compassion visiting with hospice patients. A pleasant conversation and a cup of coffee can make a difference for a hospice patient.

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — The Cape May County Library System hosts Al-Anon, Memory Café and Family Support Groups.

Al-Anon supports those whose lives have been affected by another person’s alcoholism. Memory Café is a place for those experiencing memory loss and their caregivers and family members. Family Support Group is an affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) that provides support for adults with a loved one living with a mental health condition.

Al-Anon is held at 11 a.m. each Thursday and Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Lower Cape branch in Villas.

Memory Café is held at the Cape May Court House branch one Monday per month.

OCEAN CITY — The Grief Support Group, open to any adult who is grieving the death of a loved one, is invited to attend a safe and caring gathering at 6:30 p.m. every other Tuesday year-round at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church, corner of Eighth Street and Central Avenue, Ocean City. 

There is no need to be a church member or from Ocean City to attend. “It is a time to share your story, to tell of your grief and talk of your loved one. No matter when your loss, it is healing to acknowledge its place in your life.”

Support Group

OCEAN CITY — St. John Lutheran Church, Journey Hospice, and The Shores — a United Methodist Communities (UMC) community — are partnering to offer a monthly Grief Support Group for adults who are navigating the difficult journey of loss.

The group provides a safe, welcoming and confidential space where individuals can come together to share their experiences, listen, and support one another. Whether someone has recently experienced a loss or is still processing grief from years past, all are welcome.

Meetings will be held in person on the second Wednesday of every month from 11 a.m. to noon at St. John Lutheran Church, 1001 Central Ave.

“Grief is a deeply personal experience, but it doesn’t have to be experienced alone,” group coordinators Beth Gebhart and Michele Musto said. “This group is about honoring each person’s journey and finding hope in shared understanding.”

The group is free and open to all adults, regardless of background or faith.

Call for free Family

Crisis Intervention

Families who are experiencing serious difficulties in managing the behavior of children 10 to 17 years old for whom they are responsible can seek assistance through the Atlantic County Juvenile/Family Crisis Intervention Unit (FCIU).

FCIU is a legally mandated program that is available 24 hours a day to intercede in family conflicts and help strengthen the family unit. Its services include short-term crisis stabilization, family assessment, case management, treatment planning and referrals to appropriate community-based services.

FCIU is available to meet in-person by appointment with youth and their families from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at 101 Shore Road in Northfield. Appointments can also be conducted by phone or as a virtual meeting to help de-escalate and resolve family conflicts.

Free screening

for depression 

Online screening for depression and postpartum depression is available at mhaac.info/screening.

The confidential screening involves 10 questions related to topics such as sleep habits, appetite, concentration and level of energy. Resources and recommendations are offered at the end of the survey. 

Anyone who wants to take the screening but needs assistance can call The Mental Health Association in Atlantic County at (609) 652-3800. Staff are available throughout the year by phone or by appointment. No cost, no insurance needed.
