Upper Township cuts ribbon on new pickleball complex

PETERSBURG — Township Committee welcomed local residents and pickleball enthusiasts to the new pickleball complex Dec. 8.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in front of the courts, during which Mayor Curtis Corson and Committeeman Sam Palombo spoke on improving the health of the community through recreation.

Palombo, who oversees sports and recreational Programs and public buildings and grounds, thanked everyone involved in the project, including engineer CME Associates, Upper Township Public Works and contractor WJ Gross.

“Public Works did a wonderful job in assisting prepping the spot for pickleball. It was a project that we started under the last administration but we altered it quite significantly, found almost twice the amount of grant money and made it a project that plans for the future,” Corson said.

Pickleball enthusiasts quickly took to the court. The complex has 13 courts and was part of a larger renovation project at Caldwell Park that included refurbishing the aging tennis and basketball courts.

“It’s a really great project and I’m really excited to close it out,” Palombo said during the Township Committee meeting later in the evening.

He noted the work was done through grants.

“Being able to take advantage of these grants is incredibly important for this township in trying times financially,” Palombo said.
