Toms River South ends Ocean City girls soccer team’s season in double overtime

TOMS RIVER — The Ocean City High School girls soccer team was able to push No. 5 seed Toms River South to double overtime on Wednesday, Nov. 5, but couldn’t pull off the upset.

The Red Raider girls fell 2-1 to end their season in the opening round of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group III sectional.

Emma Vince scored the lone goal for the team in the first half, but TRS tied things up in the second.

The first overtime period was scoreless, pushing the teams into a second overtime, in which TRS netted the game-winner.

Ocean City goalie Madi Adams had eight saves.

It was an up-and-down season for the Red Raiders, who started the season 5-1, including a 2-1 win over rival Mainland, then lost four of the next six games.

Coach Sean Matteo’s team finished with a 9-8-3 record overall and 7-4-1 in the Cape-Atlantic League American Division. The Red Raiders were the 12th seed in the sectional.

The team was comprised of about half seniors, including forwards Gabby Cupit, who had seven goals and two assists, and Liv Adams, who had four goals, and midfielder Jada Dooley, who had three goals and an assist.

Freshman Mya Dever led the team with nine goals and six assists and Vince, a junior, had the most team points with 20 for her seven goals and six assists.

Sophomore Savannah Rhubart had four goals and an assist; junior Aurora Brown, three goals and an assist; junior Hudson Scola, two goals and two assists; sophomore Julianna Goodman, two goals and an assist; and sophomore Lily Tedesco, one goal and one assist. Cara Meyers also scored a goal.

In addition to Cupit, Adams and Dooley, the team will graduate Maeve Geary, Delaney Ireland, Charlotte Rhubart and Lindsey Seeberger.

Madi Adams, the goalie, recorded 72 saves in 10 games and junior goalie Callie Emey had 32 saves over eight games.

The Ocean City girls finished third in the American Division behind first-place Egg Harbor Township (17-1, 12-0) and Mainland (12-6, 9-3).
