OCEAN CITY – The Ocean City Knights of Columbus are presenting Flags for Forgotten Soldiers from Nov. 8 until Veteran’s Day in honor of the number of veterans who commit suicide monthly. The number is over 600 this year.
The Knights will be at Ninth Street and Bay Avenue in Ocean City at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

OCEAN CITY — In honor of Veterans Day, Wesley by the Bay’s Have a Heart Initiative is asking for the support of local businesses/vendors by donating new items of winter weather clothing for homeless military veterans in Atlantic City and Cape May County.
Warm Hearts for Veterans is the sister campaign of Have a Heart for Veterans, held each Valentine’s Day.
New items being sought include men’s and women’s coats and jackets, socks, gloves, hats, scarves, thermal/flannel shirts, long underwear, hand and feet warmers and backpacks.
The campaign also seeks gift certificates to McDonald’s, 7-Eleven and Dunkin’ Donuts.

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — The Cape May County Division of Aging and Disability Services will host a Medicare Open Enrollment presentation open to the public from 11 a.m. to noon Oct. 10 at the main entrance to the Atlantic Cape Community College campus.
The presentation will be led by Donna Boyle, the county’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) coordinator, and will provide information on upcoming changes to Medicare Prescription Drug Plans and Medicare Advantage Plans for 2026.
Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about key updates to Medicare coverage, ask general Medicare-related questions and understand how recent legislation, including the Inflation Reduction Act, may affect coverage and costs.
SHIP offers free, objective and confidential help to Medicare beneficiaries who need assistance with insurance. Open enrollment runs Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. Individual consultations are not provided during the presentation but can be scheduled with a SHIP counselor by calling (609) 886-8138.
Artists Guild tour
set for Oct. 11-12
CAPE MAY COUNTY — The non-profit Artists Guild of the Cape has scheduled its 4th annual Studio Tour for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 11-12 at studios from Tuckahoe to Cape May.
Each day at least 17 studios will be open for free to visiting art patrons and curious visitors. Artists will be doing their work and showing their wares in home and studio settings. A map/list is available at theartistsguildofthecape.com.

Beacon Animal Rescue fundraiser Oct. 11
CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — Beacon Animal Rescue, the nonprofit, volunteer-based animal rescue serving Cape May, Atlantic and Cumberland counties, has scheduled its second-annual Golf Fundraiser for noon to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 11 at Big Little Nine in Cape May Court House.
The par-3 course will host a day of nine holes on 89 acres of meadows, willow oak trees, ponds and waterfalls.
This year there’s an added bonus: Casey’s Cause Food Truck will be on-site, offering golfers its vast menu of barbecue and rotisserie-style items, plus a variety of sodas.

Storm of 1962
HPSUT topic
OCEAN VIEW – The Historical Preservation Society of Upper Township membership meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, will feature a program by Joseph A. LaRosa Jr., Ed.D., on the March 1962 storm that hit Sea Isle City and the Jersey Shore.
LaRosa is a retired educator and author of two books about the March 1962 storm – “Our Perfect Storm”: A History of the March 1962 Storm that Devastated Sea Isle City, was published in 2010 and “Storm Stories”, published in 2019.
The meeting is at the Upper Township Senior Center at 1369 Stagecoach Road, Palermo.
LaRosa is a retired educator and a member of a family whose roots in Sea Isle City go back well over 100 years.
The 1962 storm devastated Sea Isle City, destroying much of his hometown. In response to this childhood tragedy, in 2010 he authored the first book. While completing his research, he collected many oral histories and first-person accounts. These were later published in 2019 as a second book titled “Storm Stories.” He also worked parts of every summer as an ocean lifeguard, retiring after a 52-year career. In 2010 he was elected to the Sea Isle City Beach Patrol Hall of Fame.

SEA ISLE CITY — The Recreation Department has scheduled its annual Halloween Parade and Family Dance Party for Oct. 17.
The parade is set to begin at 7 p.m. from 45th to 40th streets on Landis Avenue, featuring decorative floats, live music and a variety of costumed participants.
Immediately after the parade, families are welcome to attend the Halloween Dance Party at Excursion Park, where a DJ will play music and awards will be presented to the parade’s top entries.

NORTHFIELD – October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Shore Medical Center and Advanced Shore Imaging Associates are partnering to make lifesaving screenings more accessible. Together, they will offer free screening mammograms 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 25, at Advanced Shore Imaging Associates, 2605 Shore Road, Northfield. Appointments are required.
This event is primarily for women who are uninsured or underinsured, but is open to any woman who is eligible for a screening mammogram, including women age 40 and older, and women under 40 with a family history of breast cancer who are due for screening
A prescription or imaging order from a physician is required. Women who do not have a prescription can receive one by scheduling a free clinical breast exam the week prior to the event. Appointments for both the screening and clinical breast exam can be made by calling (609) 653-3440.

SEA ISLE CITY — The Cape May County Library System Children’s Department presents Jumpin’ Jamie, a “kindie rock” artist who makes music for children.
Jamie has played hundreds of shows from birthday parties to stadiums and everything in between, performing at comics conventions, corporate events and even for celebrities such as Idina Menzel and Alicia Keys.
Their debut album “Kookie” kicked off the “kindie rock” era, followed by his two albums “Never Mind the Blocks, Here’s Jumpin’ Jamie” and “Mosaic.”

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — The Cape May County Board of Commissioners is sponsoring fall and winter events at the Cape May County Park and Zoo that are free and open to the public.
Halloween fun returns Oct. 25 with Boo at the Zoo, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is a full day of festivities for all ages. Guests are encouraged to wear costumes and enjoy a wide variety of attractions, including children’s games, a craft station, candy giveaways, live entertainment, animal encounters and an inflatable obstacle course.
A highlight of the day is the Halloween Costume Contest. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the contest at 11 a.m. Prizes will be awarded following the contest.
At 12:30 p.m. is a lively musical performance by a “Hocus Pocus”-inspired witch trio on the center stage. Throughout the event, Master DJ & Sound will keep the energy high with a mix of Halloween-themed music.
Be on the lookout when the Pirates and Princesses take over the Zoo from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 8.
Visitors of all ages are invited to wear their best dress-up apparel to the event, which includes activities for children, a craft station, games, entertainment, an inflatable pirate ship and animals. In a tribute to an old boardwalk tradition, there will be sketch artists offering live portrait sketches. Artists Tim Smith and Tony Troy, with their own distinct styles, will do sketches for an additional $20 fee.

SOMERS POINT – Shore Physicians Group (SPG) is offering a convenient drive-through flu vaccine clinic – 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at SPG’s Northfield office at 2605 Shore Road.
Flu vaccines will be available for adults age 18 and older, with specific vaccines for patients 65+. Individuals at high risk are encouraged to discuss flu vaccination with their primary care provider before attending.
Although pharmacies began offering flu shots as early as August, the CDC recommends vaccination in September and October for the best protection throughout flu season.
SPG patients can schedule their appointments by calling (609) 365-6200. Each appointment is scheduled in five-minute blocks to keep the process fast and convenient.
This year’s clinics are for the flu vaccine only. COVID-19 boosters or combination flu/COVID vaccines are not available at these events; patients seeking those options should contact their local pharmacy.

Soroptimist International of Cape May County is seeking applicants for its 2025-26 “Live Your Dream” Education and Training Awards for Women.
This year there are three awards being offered; two for $2,000 and one for $2,500.
The awards are presented to county women who provide primary financial support to their dependents (children and family) and who are enrolled or accepted in a vocational/skills training or undergraduate degree program. Recipients are able to use the awards to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education such as books, child care and transportation.

OCEAN CITY – The Grief Support Group, open to any adult who is grieving the death of a loved one, is invited to attend a safe and caring gathering at 6:30 p.m. every other Tuesday year-round at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church, corner of Eighth Street and Central Avenue, Ocean City.
There is no need to be a church member or from Ocean City to attend. “It is a time to share your story, to tell of your grief and talk of your loved one. It is a place where you may express your feelings, without judgment, nor fixing. Everything is confidential and you, as well, are privileged and entrusted with the heart-felt stories of others. No matter when your loss, it is healing to acknowledge its place in your life.”

Support Group
OCEAN CITY – St. John Lutheran Church, Journey Hospice, and The Shores – a United Methodist Communities (UMC) Community – are partnering to offer a monthly Grief Support Group for adults who are navigating the difficult journey of loss.
The group provides a safe, welcoming and confidential space where individuals can come together to share their experiences, listen, and support one another. Whether someone has recently experienced a loss or is still processing grief from years past, all are welcome.
Meetings will be held in person on the second Wednesday of every month from 11 a.m. to noon at St. John Lutheran Church, 1001 Central Ave.
“Grief is a deeply personal experience, but it doesn’t have to be experienced alone,” group coordinators Beth Gebhart and Michele Musto said. “This group is about honoring each person’s journey and finding hope in shared understanding.”
The group is free and open to all adults, regardless of background or faith.

Crisis Intervention
Families who are experiencing serious difficulties in managing the behavior of children 10 to 17 years old for whom they are responsible can seek assistance through the Atlantic County Juvenile/Family Crisis Intervention Unit (FCIU).
FCIU is a legally mandated program that is available 24 hours a day to intercede in family conflicts and help strengthen the family unit. Its services include short-term crisis stabilization, family assessment, case management, treatment planning and referrals to appropriate community-based services.
FCIU is available to meet in-person by appointment with youth and their families from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at 101 Shore Road in Northfield. Appointments can also be conducted by phone or as a virtual meeting to help de-escalate and resolve family conflicts.

for depression
Online screening for depression and postpartum depression is available at mhaac.info/screening.
The confidential screening involves 10 questions related to topics such as sleep habits, appetite, concentration and level of energy. Resources and recommendations are offered at the end of the survey.
Anyone who wants to take the screening but needs assistance can call The Mental Health Association in Atlantic County at (609) 652-3800. Staff are available throughout the year by phone or by appointment. No cost, no insurance needed.
