Classic island bungalow close to the bay updated but keeps its beach vibe

OCEAN CITY — The classic shore town bungalow at 26 Sunset Place is the perfect mix of nostalgic and new.

While the two-bedroom rancher maintains its 1950s charm on the outside and interior design — the living room, dining area and kitchen are on the left, bedrooms (one with a powder room) and a full bathroom on the right — all of the main facets of the home have been updated to what discerning homebuyers are seeking in the 2020s.

“This cozy retreat features a stylish eat-in kitchen with stainless steel appliances, as well as hardwood floors and an inviting enclosed front porch,” listing agent Gray Haenn said. “Whether you’re looking for a year-round residence or a vacation getaway, this move-in-ready home has it all.”

Out front, a steppingstone path between the concrete and grass driveway and lush front lawn leads up to the front porch, which has a 9-foot-tall ceiling and screened windows on three sides, offering comfort without blocking light and the summer bay breeze.

A door with keypad entry opens into the living room, offering a view straight through to the back door beyond the kitchen.

Sporting original narrow-plank hardwoods flooring, the living room has abundant light from a double window facing front and another on the beach side. A sectional sofa is arranged around a flat-screen television hanging on a rustic wood-plank accent wall. The enclosed ceiling fan reminiscent of a 1950s diner is among the special touches added when the home was remodeled.

Between the living room and kitchen, a round table seats four in the dining area. Just steps away in the kitchen, which has new wood-impression laminate flooring, more seating is provided at the quartz-topped bar with three stools and a window.

New white custom cabinets with self-close, soft-close doors and drawers, quartz countertops and a subway tile backsplash brighten the space, where stainless steel appliances include a two-door refrigerator with a freezer drawer, a four-burner range with a microwave above and a dishwasher to the left of the corner sink.

A short hallway off the living room leads to the bedroom area.

Set in the front corner, the smaller of the two features the same original hardwood flooring as the living room. The home is being sold fully furnished, including the full-size bed, night stand, dresser and desk. The closet has a new six-panel door with black hardware.

Sandwiched between the two bedrooms is a full bathroom with a laminate floor, vanity and fiberglass tub/shower with a curtain.

The primary bedroom is in the corner, with a window facing the rear and bay side. It has a queen-size bed pushed up against another rustic wood-plank wall.

Another bonus is the powder room, which comes in handy in the middle of the night or when visitors are sleeping over. It has bead board wainscoting, adding another nice touch to the overall decor.

Back in the kitchen, a door in the corner opens onto a wood porch and grassy backyard, where a picnic table awaits hungry bellies after a long day on the beach. There’s plenty of room for a sprinkler or lawn games for the kids.

“Enjoy fabulous outdoor living with a spacious fenced-in yard, outdoor shower and a large shed offering excellent storage,” Haenn said.

The large storage shed facing the front provides abundant space for beach chairs, surfboards, kayak and other summer gear.

The bay is just a half-block away, with access at 15th Street.

Ocean City is one of the most popular shore resorts on the East Coast, featuring an oceanfront boardwalk filled with hundreds of shopping, dining and entertainment venues, as well as miles and miles of pristine beaches.

A great location doesn’t only mean beachfront or bayfront on this 8-mile-long island — there are 10 distinct neighborhoods, each with its own characteristics.

The beach and boardwalk — 2.5 miles of oceanfront entertainment, restaurants, thrill rides and souvenir shops — get most of the attention in this seaside resort, but the island has much more to offer.

An award-winning downtown stretches from Sixth to 14th streets along Asbury Avenue and has expanded onto other nearby streets, offering more than 100 shops and cafes.

There’s also the popular watersports district around Third Street on Bay Avenue, where the brave can rent powerboats, go parasailing, join the crew of a pirate ship and take a kayak tour of the back bays. Private and party boat fishing tours are also available.

Stretching along Great Egg Harbor Bay, the aptly named Bay Area follows Bay Avenue from North Street to 16th Street. This area is particularly appealing to watersport enthusiasts. With marinas, personal watercraft, sailing, parasailing and a new water park, the Bay Area caters to those who love to live their life on the water.

Other features include on-demand hot water, central air conditioning and baseboard hot water heat.

The property is listed for $950,000 with Gray Haenn of Berger Realty. Call (215) 421-7609 or email grayocnj@gmail.com for more information or to set up an appointment to see this wonderful home.
